Xanthum Gum

What is xanthum gum?  Natures Garden's xanthum gum is a food grade, polysacharide, all natural thickener, designed to maintain transparency in cosmetic product formulations.  Xanthum gum is a leading thickener used by chemists to naturally thicken bath gel, shampoo, bubble bath, lotions, creams, shower gels, and liquid soaps.  A little xanthum gum goes a long way; with only .1-1% of xanthum gum needed to thicken a cosmetic product.  Since xanthum gum can clump up in water, xanthum gum should be added to room temperature distilled water, and mixed for at least 5 minutes with a hand mixer so that the xanthum gum can properly blend with the water.  Once the xanthum gum is thoroughly mixed, you must move fast to add this mixture to the rest of your formula.  Allowing the water/xanthum mixture to set too long will cause your finished product to look like tapioca pudding.

What to do if a fragrance oil makes your shampoo base/ bath gel base too thin:  Sometimes a fragrance oil can thin a finished shampoo or bath gel.  If this happens, you will need to use a product called xanthum gum to thicken your product.  Xanthum gum is an all-natural thickener, and a little xanthum gum goes a long way.  Xanthum gum is used in a range of .1 to 1% of the overall mixture.  Start with only 1/2 tsp of xanthum gum, and add it to 1/4 cup of room temperature distilled water.  Use a hand mixer, and mix the water/xanthum gum on high speed for about 5 minutes.  If you find that this mixture is not thick enough for your needs, add more thanthum gum to it and blend.   Xanthum gum can clump up, so it is important that you mix it into the water thoroughly.  Quickly add the mixture to your shampoo base and stir.  If you wait too long to add the xanthum gum mixture to the shampoo base, you will end up with a product that looks like tapioca pudding.  Allow the product to set up.  This should thicken your shampoo base.  While our xanthum gum was formulated to work in transluscent gel products, there are times that the fragrance itself may cloud the mixture.

Note:  You will need to test each product/fragrance combination that you make.  Since Natures Garden carries so many unscented base products, and more than 700 fragrance oils, it is the responsibility of the customer to perform the necessary tests to get the consistency they require.
